Courting Dance – by Minerva Teichert
This is a beautiful southwest Native American dance called the Courting Dance. Minerva Teichert witnessed the dance several times near her home in Idaho. As part of art, Minerva often didn’t have enough money for frames and would therefore paint her own beautiful borders right into the painting. This remarkable piece includes her own painted border design.
Minerva Teichert art has a distinctive style that can be seen in most of her paintings today. For example Teichert painted much of the clothing in her paintings with patterns, a detail unique to her paintings. She would also include the color red to add contrast. She often left the edges unfinished or just sketched. Many of her paintings are filled with the colors from the desert and feature distant mountains. She loved painting scenes from the western Native American perspective also.
